Garden calendar: October
Although we had some warmer days over September, the autumn is now definitely here for real, and it feels colder. It’s a beautiful time of year, with the trees changing colour. It’s also time to start preparing for early frosts.
i.Following operations should be completed within the time specified:
a. 1st Oct. to 10th Oct.: Preparation of seed beds
b. 10thOct. to 20thOct.: Sowing of seeds and bed preparation for saplings
c. 20thOct. to 5th Nov.: Planting of seedlings/saplings
ii.Beds should be prepared for sowing of seasonal seeds and plantings of seedlings. The procedure of preparing seed bed is as follows:
a.Seed bed should be dug properly and free from weeds, roots, stones, pebbles or any unwanted materials.
b.The soil should be properly prepared by mixing generous quantities of peat moss, compost and processed manure with your existing soil.
c.Sowing bed should be always well drained
d.Seed beds should be minimum 6” above ground of which 2-3” layer is made up of brick/stone ballast and the top 3” should be filled with soil mix comprising of 45% soil + 40% sand (river sand/ fine sand) +10% FYM + 5% cocopith, 100gm/cu m of Anti termite powder and Bavistin.
e.After seedbeds are ready shallow trench is made and seeds are scattered thinly into it and covered very lightly. In heavy soils, small seeds are covered with Vermiculite or some other light material to prevent crusting.
f.After sowing the bed should be watered lightly. The surface of the seedbed should be kept moist with daily watering.
g.After sowing seeds the seed beds should be covered with polythene sheet (as in poly tunnel) or some thorny objects like thorny stems so that the seeds won’t be displaced and germination takes place easily.
Disease of the month:
It can be identified by the powdery coating of fungus on the surface of infected parts like leaves, stems and fruits of plants. Dull white powdery mass appears on the entire leaf surface and also on growing stems. It can be controlled by application of Sulfur-dust, Dinocap and Karathane, Diatham M 45.
Insects of the month:
Treatment: Application of Malathion at a rate of 1 ml per 10 lit of water at an interval of 15 days.
• Leaves of deciduous tree start falling in the month so cleaning of gardens should be done regularly
• Rake fallen leaves off lawns before they block out light and air penetration to the grass.
